I wanted to kick things off with this TED Talk from Drew Dudley. In it, he argues that leadership isn’t about “celebrating amazing things that hardly anybody can do” but rather about helping to change “one person’s understanding of what they’re capable of” or “how powerful an agent for change they can be.”
I love Dudley’s idea that every one of us has been the catalyst for a lollipop moment. Perhaps others see you as a leader but you don’t see that in yourself? Maybe he’s right ~ you just haven’t been told what a difference you’ve made in someone’s life. Teaching is a tough gig these days so I think this is an important reminder for all of us who share in this profession we love. Let’s take on his challenge and create, acknowledge, pay forward and say thank you. Don’t let those lollipop moments go unnoticed!
“We need to redefine leadership as being about lollipop moments, how many of them we create, how many of them we acknowledge, how many of them we pay forward, and how many of them we say thank you for.” ~ Drew Dudley
